Fourth of July BBQ’s

It’s an American tradition, the 4th of July backyard bbq.  I enjoyed myself while participating in this longstanding event.  Hot dogs, burgers, potato salad and beer, lots of it.  There’s a few new trends I’ve noticed in the backyard bbq world.  Vegie burgers, turkey burgers and turkey dogs.  I’m an Iowa girl, I’m fine with the vegie burger, but turkey dogs?  I’ll take an all beef Ball Park Frank any day.

The other trend I noticed was the presence of fundraising.  The bbq I attended was benifiting the Max Fund.  I’ve recently become with MDA and they encouraged us to put buckets out at bbq’s to help raise money.  I like this trend, giving back to the community seems as American as apple pie, or Ball Park Franks.

The flip side to Obama’s plan

There is a flip side to Obama’s plan.. paying for it.  There are many ideas on how to pay for public health care without taxing the entire population to the hilt.  Part of the plan mentioned was to do away with tax write-offs for charitable donations.  It seems to me this is a very bad idea.  In 2006 there were nearly 1.5 million registered nonprofit organizations in the US.  The number of people benifiting from all of these organizations is astounding.  Without the existance of nonprofits you can bet that the need for more government welfare spending will increase tenfold.  Major corporations will drop their charitable donations if there is no incentive for them to donate.

Obama’s health plan

Having watched Obama’s discussion on health care last night, it seems that there may finally be a real solution to the problems small business’s have in providing health insurance to their employees.  Providing health benefits has always been a struggle for restaurants as so many are independanlty owned and operated.  The ability to offer benefits to employees helps reduce workforce turnover and adds to the over all success of a restaurant.   A public health care system may be what levels the playing field for this industry.
